YES! Good news, Itch Flea Treatment is safe for pregnant dogs.
It is not safe for nursing dogs in close contact with puppies under 8 weeks old.
It’s super important that you don’t stop your dog's regular flea treatment even when they’re pregnant or nursing as this will put them at real risk of developing a flea problem. After birth, once the puppies are over 8 weeks old and weighing over 3kg, you can continue flea treatment for your cat and start your puppies' first round of treatment. Fleas can transmit quickly in developing litters, so it's important to stay on top of treatment!
We asked our in-house vet, Zoe Costigan (BVSc, BSc Hons, CERT AVP ARCVS) about the significance of flea treatment during pregnancy and nursing; Here’s what she had to say - “I’ve seen so many pets suffering because they weren’t treated for fleas. Itch Flea Treatment for Dogs is safe for pregnant dogs and ensures no gaps in protection during this important time.”
Tablets
Tablets should be avoided, especially during pregnancy, as they contain ingredients that can potentially harm developing pups.
Flea Collars
Most flea collars also contain ingredients that are not considered safe for pregnant or nursing dogs so should be avoided as your chosen method of flea control!
Flea Shampoos
Flea shampoos can also contain harmful ingredients which can be absorbed by your dog's skin and cause issues. There is also limited proof of effectiveness in their ability to kill fleas and keep them gone!
Topical, spot on or flea drops treatments are the safest flea treatment for pregnant dogs. Please check product before using on nursing dogs, most spot on treatments shouldn't be used in close contact with puppies under 8 weeks old.
Why are they safe?
They are not ingested by your cat and contain ingredients such as Fipronil and (S) Methoprene which are fast-acting, effective active ingredients against fleas at all lifecycle stages, and are safe for your pets!
