Yes, flea eggs look like dandruff. Both are tiny white specks in your cat’s or dog’s fur. However, if you look really close, you can tell them apart.

Flea eggs are smooth, oval and usually pearly white. They're about 0.5 millimetres long. Unlike dandruff flakes, they resemble tiny, rounded grains rather than flat pieces of skin. They are not firmly attached to fur, so they readily fall into carpets, bedding and furniture.

Dandruff consists of shed skin cells. The flakes are generally flat, irregularly shaped and different in size. They can easily be caught in pet fur or on a comb. Finding dandruff does not rule out fleas because scratching and itching with fleas can cause dry and flaky skin.

To check for fleas, gently use a flea comb and look for fleas or dark specks called flea dirt. Place dark specks onto damp white kitchen roll. Flea dirt leaves a reddish brown stain because it contains digested blood.
