Right. So, you’ve vacuumed like your life depends on it, sprayed the entire house in flea spray, washed everything down to your soul – and yet, the little sods are still hopping about like they own the place. Welcome to the nightmare that is a full-blown flea infestation.
If you’re on the brink of shaving your pet bald and setting fire to your carpet, don’t panic just yet. Here’s what actually works when it feels like nothing does.
Fleas aren’t just hanging out on your dog or cat. They’re hiding in the sofa, under the skirting boards, and in other areas of your home - click here for more info on where fleas live. Fleas take over your home by laying up to 50 eggs a day. These eggs fall off your pet and scatter all over your home. This manifests into a full blown flea infestation because of the vicious flea life cycle - find out how to break the flea life cycle here!
Start here. Even if your house is crawling, your pets are the main flea food source. If they’ve still got fleas, the rest is pointless.
Make sure to use vet-strength flea treatment.
Most flea treatments only include one active ingredient, Fipronil which works to kill the fleas currently on your pet but doesn’t contribute to breaking the flea life cycle. Flea treatments, like Itch Flea treatment for cats and dogs which includes S-Methoprene, alongside Fipronil. S-Methoprene is an active ingredient that prevents flea eggs, pupae and larvae from growing into breeding adults, halting the reproductive cycle. Not all flea treatments include S-Methoprene, but without it, a flea infestation is likely to come back.
Use ongoing flea treatment.
As mentioned, fleas can live in your home and some may stick around (and even lie dormant until the conditions are ideal for them) so it is important to keep up with regular treatment on your pet. This ensures all fleas bothering your pet will be killed and prevent infestation from coming back.
Treat every pet, at the same time.
Fleas hop from host (your pet) to host so if all pets aren’t treated at the same time, your flea infestation will be never ending.
Don’t forget to deworm your pet.
Fleas carry tapeworms. It’s grim, but it’s true. So if your pet has fleas, there’s a chance they will also get worms. Double whammy. Try the Itch Flea and Wormer treatment subscription plan to ensure your pet is flea and worm free.
Vacuuming is your best friend. But it’s got to be obsessive, bordering on ridiculous.
Do it daily. carpets, sofas, pet beds, under furniture, along skirting boards.
Use a vacuum with strong suction and a HEPA filter if you can.
Immediately empty the vacuum outside. don’t just leave the bag or dust canister sitting around. Otherwise, the fleas will stick around!
Fleas hate hot water. They also hate soap. So, gather every washable item – pet bedding, human bedding, soft furnishings, towels, dressing gowns – and wash it all on 60°C (or higher).
Do this twice a week for at least a month.
If you’ve already sprayed and if it did nothing, here’s what might’ve gone wrong:
Wrong product: Most over-the-counter sprays kill adult fleas but not the eggs or larvae. You need an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) – this stops fleas from maturing. Try the Itch Flea Home Spray for all households with fleas. It kills fleas for up to 2 months after just one blast and halts flea life stages for 12 months.
Missed areas: Fleas love dark, undisturbed places. Think under the bed, inside wardrobes, behind furniture. Any cracks and crevices. Treat these places too.
Not reapplying: Flea eggs can hatch weeks later. Spray again after 2–3 weeks to catch the next batch.
The worst mistake? Stopping the moment you stop seeing fleas. Don’t. Keep treating for at least two months, even if you think it’s over.
Why? Because flea eggs can lie dormant for up to six months. You don’t want another flea problem later down the line.
