How to give a deworming pill to dogs

Giving your dog a worming tablet can be calm and straightforward, if you have a little patience.

One of the easiest methods is to hide the deworming pill in a small amount of food so that your dog enjoys it and cannot detect the tablet. Try cooked chicken or cheese. If your dog is a little too smart for this, give them treats or their favourite snacks before hand without a hidden tablet, so that when you try to adminster the worming treatment they'll assume it's not in the food.

Simple & easy steps to give your dog a deworming pill:

  • Read the back of the pack and confirm it's the right dose for your dog's weight

  • Remove the tablet from the packet

  • Hide the pill in a small piece of food, like cooked chicken, cheese, or a pill pocket

  • Give to your dog and ensure the pill is fully swallowed

  • If your dog spits out the worming tablet, gently hold your their mouth with one hand and tilt the head slightly upwards

  • Use your other hand to open their jaw and place the pill as far back on the tongue as possible

  • Close your dog's mouth immediately after placing the pill and gently stroke the throat to encourage swallowing (check again that the pill has not been spat out)

  • Give your dog some water afterwards and lots of loving!
