Why is my dog shuffling its bum across the carpet?

Your dog shuffling or dragging its bum (often called "scooting") on the carpet is usually a sign that something is irritating or uncomfortable in the rear area.

This is probably because they have:

Anal gland issues

Dogs have small anal glands on either side of their anus. These glands can become full, impacted, or infected, causing discomfort. Scooting is a common way dogs try to relieve pressure or itchiness from full anal glands. A fishy smell is often a clue that this is the issue.

Worms

Tapeworms, in particular, can cause itching around the anus. Look for small white segments around your dog’s rear or in its stool. Make sure to treat your dog with Itch Wormer tablets if you suspect this is the problem.

Itchy skin or allergies

Allergies (to food, environmental factors, or fleas) can cause itching, including in sensitive areas like the rear. You might also see your dog licking or chewing its paws or skin.

Matted fur or debris

Especially in long-haired dogs, feces or foreign material (like grass) can get stuck around the anus and cause irritation.
