Flea parasite nestled between grey cat fur

Do fleas have wings?

Fleas do not have wings. They are small, wingless insects that instead of flying, will jump around. Their bodies are flattened from side to side, which helps them move easily through the fur or feathers of your pet. They also have strong hind legs that allow them to leap impressive distances (up to about 100 times their own body length!).

Let's look at a picture of a flea so you can see what they look like up close ⬇️

See, no wings. Just long, bouncy legs to make them look in flight, even though they are just hopping around.

Fleas are external parasites, meaning they live on the outside of animals such as dogs, cats, and sometimes even us, humans. They feed on blood using specialised mouthparts designed for piercing skin and sucking. Because they cannot fly, fleas rely entirely on jumping or direct contact to spread from one host to another.

Their lack of wings is actually an advantage. Wings would get in the way when navigating through dense fur or feathers. Being wingless and compact helps fleas stay hidden and difficult to remove.
