What kills fleas in the house?

Fleas are tiny and even though they are dark brown, they’re hard to spot. Fleas cause itching and scratching but since they’re tiny, fast, and excellent at hiding, you can’t always see what’s causing you and your pet discomfort. It’s also possible to have a flea infestation without showing these symptoms - Swipe down for an easy trick to tell your pet has fleas!

Is it possible to have fleas but you can’t see them?

Fleas are incredibly small (about 1–3 mm) and they move quickly. On top of that, they avoid light and prefer hiding in:

• Carpet fibers
• Upholstery
• Pet bedding
• Floorboard cracks

You’re more likely to notice the effects of fleas before you see one.

Common signs of fleas include:

• Persistent itching (you or your pets)
• Small red bites, often around ankles
• “Flea dirt” (tiny black specks) on pet fur or bedding
• Pets scratching, biting, or grooming excessively

How do I find a flea nest in my house?

Before going all-in, let’s do a quick check to see if you have fleas:

  • Place a white sock on your hand and rub your pet’s fur

  • Look for black specks (flea dirt)

  • Drop specks on a damp paper towel and if they turn reddish, it’s flea waste (digested blood)

You can also try the “white sock test” on carpets, walk around and check if anything jumps onto it → If you’re seeing these signs, it’s time to act.

It’s hard to find where fleas are living in your home and annoyingly, they could be everywhere like on your doormat or even in the cracks of your sofa. Your best bet is to treat your pet and your home, so they are killed no matter where they are!

What kills fleas on my pet?

If you have pets, they’re almost always the primary host. You won’t kill 100% of fleas without addressing them directly.

Options to consider:

- Vet strength flea treatments like Itch Flea for Cats and Itch Flea for Dogs.
- Flea collars (less effective alone, but helpful as part of a system)
- Medicated flea shampoos

Some modern treatments can kill fleas instantly (and by that, we mean within hours) making them one of the fastest ways to break the flea lifecycle.

MUST KNOWS for using flea treatment!

  • REVEAL TIP

Treat all your pets at once so the fleas can’t hop and breed between animals.

  • REVEAL TIP

Avoid using multiple treatments at once without guidance - Overdoing it can harm your pet.

  • REVEAL TIP

Use a flea treatment dose that is right for your pet’s breed and weight - Some dogs treatments can be harmful to cats

Vacuuming is one of the most underrated ways to get rid of fleas. It removes flea eggs, larvae, pupae and adult fleas - This means it targets ALL stages of the flea life cycle. Vacuum your entire home daily for at least 1–2 weeks and immediately empty the vacuum outside to prevent fleas from escaping back into your home.

How to get rid of fleas in your home

As we’ve mentioned, vacuuming is extremely important. Focus on carpets, soft furniture, floorboards and anywhere your pet likes to go.

Also you need to wash everything. Fleas can’t survive high temperatures so wash pet bedding, blankets, cushions and your bedding on a hot wash (higher than 60 degrees folks!) Then dry on the highest heat setting possible.

Steam cleaning can speed up flea removal but like vacuuming it isn’t a one-time thing, you should steam clean soft furnishings and clothes several times a week during an infestation.

Cleaning your home is essential if you want to kill 100% of fleas rather than just reducing numbers.

What kills fleas in the house?

If you’re serious about eliminating fleas, you’ll need more than cleaning.

Options include:

• Flea sprays with insect growth regulators (IGRs)
• Foggers (use carefully and follow instructions)
• Natural powders like diatomaceous earth

IGRs are particularly important because they stop flea eggs from developing into adults.

Without this step, you may think you’ve succeeded, only to still have fleas weeks later when eggs hatch.

What is the flea life cycle?

Every person dealing with fleas should understand the flea life cycle. Why? Because it’s the reason people go wrong and can’t get rid of fleas for months on end. When conditions are ideal (i.e. when it’s warm and humid), the flea life cycle means fleas breed super quickly, up to 50 eggs a day!

Flea life cycle stages:

1. Egg
2. Larvae
3. Pupae
4. Adult

The pupal stage is the problem, fleas here can stay dormant for weeks. That means you might think the fleas are gone but then they suddenly reappear.

This is why consistent treatment over time is key. If you stop too early, you won’t kill 100% of fleas.

Why won’t fleas go away even after trying everything?

When it comes to fleas, one treatment is never enough. Fleas can last for up to 3 months and that’s even with treatment and a consistent routine. But if you skip these, you’ll likely still have fleas (even if things seem better at first).

Simple steps to fully get rid of fleas:

• Vacuum daily for 1–2 weeks
• Wash fabrics regularly
• Reapply treatments as directed
• Keep pets protected

If fleas seem impossible to eliminate, they’re probably hiding in overlooked spots like under furniture, along skirting boards, inside cracks in flooring and car interiors. Yes, your car can be a flea hotspot especially if pets ride with you. Spray or vacuum these areas thoroughly.

Get rid of fleas and stop them from coming back.
